US Government Introduced an Anti-Bullying Bill for Higher Education

November 22nd, 2010 by outsourcing

The US government recently released a law against bullying—requiring schools nationwide with student loans to provide protection against the mischievous act of coercion.

What triggered the amendment was the later event of a Rutgers University student who jumps off the bridge—suspected because of cyber bullying. Clementi, 18 took his life after tow of his roommates took a video of him and other man having sex. What’s more horrible is that these privacy invaders webcasted the sex video as a form of bullying.

Due to the staggering event, The US government along with U.S. House and Senate by Rep. Rush Holt and Sen. Frank Lautenberg introduced the “Tyler Clementi Higher Education Anti-Harassment Act”. Universities and schools nationwide which will not strictly implement such act will be receiving no federal aid from the government. The act also enables funding for campus schools and universities to fully employ anti bullying programs.

Bullying has been a tradition for college campuses as well as K12 education systems. That’s why the New Jersey state is configuring policies on anti-bullying and the appropriate implementation of the act.

There are several recorded act of cyber bullying in schools worldwide. Mostly, high school and college students get involved—utilizing the high technology media—which has enabled fast dispersion of demoralizing photos, and videos.

In the case of Clementi, authorities were not a hundred percent sure if he took his life because of the sex video. But his story was used to provoke the sentiment of the federal government against gay discrimination, and cyber bullying with the help of several civil rights organizations.

Moreover, Clementi’s family felt justified despite the loss. “It was enough for their son to invoke change of values and respect for human dignity” said Paul Mainardi, the family’s attorney.

Meanwhile, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei have been pulled out from Rutgers University and recently facing charges of invasion of privacy. The culprits are waiting for court order while the justice department is thinking of transcending charges to bias crimes due to the sexual orientation of Clementi.
