Firefighter Academy Classes at Guam Community College
The Guam Community College offers Fire Academy classes and still open for aspiring persons in the field of firefighting. Classes will start on the 2nd of August and interested individuals will take up the physical agility test which is required for enrolled at the academy.
The education program is highly funded by the Department of Public Health and Social Services Community Services Block Grant through ARRA, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The program grants $ 70, 000 to 30 students enrolled at the Fire Academy class of Guam Community College.
The Fire Academy Training will require a three to four month determination and commitment from the students paid by the block grant. The grant will pay up to 80 percent of the academy coursework meanwhile the Guam Community College Student Financial Aid Office will work with the applicants in assuring the remaining 20 percent from the Pell Grant in payment of the coursework.
According to FSS Joey C. San Nicolas, the Guam Fire Department needs about 1000 firefighters and potential career opportunities will extend beyond the local government. Thus may probably reach to employment opportunities in the Guam Fire Department Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) or to the Federal Fire Department.
The Guam Community College Fire Academy requirements are the following; High school diploma/GED, Currently unemployed or employed part-time, be physically fit, have, or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license, able to pass a written examination, and be a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien.
