They were both employees of the Cascades Mill before their sad experience happened, which they never expected it to happen. The event made them realized they needed to enhance their knowledge and skills by way of going back to school. True to their words, they were able to get a high school diploma at the Lillie Street facility, without even applying for a student loan.

Ferguson said when he work at Cascades he was completely unprepared what the future might bring to him as he continue to work with said company. He also did not expect the manufacturing sector would also experienced difficulties because of the dwindling economy of many countries of the world, most especially in the American region. He said during his teenage days with Michalski, they were drop outs in high school and never had the time to go back for many years. In the previous years, he said, you can easily get a good-paying job. This means there is no difficulty looking for a living. Unfortunately, today is a very different situation than ever before.

He said it was only in February 2006 after he was laid off from his work that he began to realize he needed to re-train so that he will also become marketable to new employers. Michalski also realized the importance of finishing even a Grade 12 education so that he can go back to work again.
